The UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies is one of the world's leading specialist institutions, and the largest national centre in the UK, for the study of Central, Eastern and South-East Europe and Russia.
SSEES has experts in virtually all the areas that are relevant to a study of Russia, in both historical and contemporary perspective. Our degrees with Russian are unique in drawing on this wide range of expertise in history, politics, economics, literature and cultural studies, and of course in the teaching and study of the Russian language. In the Russian Department we have received the highest ratings for our teaching and courses, and aim to provide our students with high quality teaching within a flexible and wide-ranging degree programme. Graduates from this Department have an enviable record in securing employment, much of which enables them to use their Russian.
The Russian Department has a wide range of research expertise in Russian literature, from medieval to contemporary and Russian culture (cinema, theatre, philosophy, folklore etc.). .). SSEES also has a Centre for Russian Studies which acts as a focus for the large body of specialists on Russia not only in the Russian Department but also in the History and Social Sciences Departments, and at other departments of University College too. The Centre promotes regular seminars, conferences and visits by Russian speakers at SSEES, and brings together the very many postgraduate students doing MA courses and MPhil/PhD research on all aspects of Russia. SSEES also has Russian Cinema research Group affiliated to the Centre for Russian Studies.
