The School of Languages Linguistics and Film is a collaboration of 7 departments. Language courses are complemented with options in Russian literature, film, art, and linguistics. Advanced students can also choose a yearlong class in Liaison Interpreting, which provides practical skills in oral translation–a unique feature of our programme.

Students pursue a rigorous core course in the Russian language, which leads them to advanced proficiency in listening, reading, speaking and writing the language. Students without prior exposure to Russian start an intensive preliminary ab initio course, which gives them in one year the equivalent of an A level in Russian. The school's Linguistics department has a broad range of applied and practical courses in the scientific study of language and has been ranked top in the last two Research Assessment Exercises. The programme in Comparative Literature provides a range of intellectually stimulating courses with intercultural thrusts.

Our Russian department run Year Abroad programmes and provide challenging courses in languages and culture that can be taken in combination with other subjects.
