Wolves commemorated the opening of their newly-installed floodlights at Molineux with a 3-1 floodlit friendly defeat of South Africa on 30th September 1953. Over the next four years, Wolves played a series of floodlit friendlies and remained unbeaten throughout. Evening matches under the Molineux lights against the likes of Spartak Moscow, Dynamo Moscow and Real Madrid gained iconic status, but none more so than the thrilling defeat of Honved on 13th December 1954 that captured the attention of the nation.

In August 1955 Wolves played two friendly matches in the Soviet Union against Spartak Moscow and Dynamo Moscow. On 7th August, Spartak avenged their earlier defeat at Molineux (http://youtu.be/2E3X_boOowg) with a comfortable 3-0 win over Wolves and, just five days later, Dynamo narrowly defeated Stan Cullis' team 3-2.

Bill Slater, Eddie Clamp and captain Billy Wright formed an impressive half-back line for much of the 1955-56 season and for the return friendly against Dynamo at Molineux. England manager Walter Winterbottom subsequently utilised Slater, Clamp and Wright in an all-Wolves half-back line line at the 1958 World Cup finals. Amidst further familiarity from the likes of Bert Williams, Johnny Hancocks, Jimmy Mullen and Peter Broadbent, 20-year-old centre-forward Jimmy Murray made his Wolves debut against Dynamo. Murray was a replacement for Roy Swinbourne who had injured his right knee in a match at Luton Town just four days previously. It ultimately proved to be a career-ending injury for the unlucky Swinbourne. Murray, however, finished with 11 goals in 25 league appearances for Wolves at the end of the 1955-56 season and ended his Wolves career with a magnificent total of 166 goals in 299 appearances.

Dynamo, together with rivals Spartak Moscow, were the dominant teams in Soviet football during the 1950s. Against Wolves, manager Mikhail Yakushin included in his team defender, and captain, Konstantin Krizhevsky, centre-forward Yuri Kuznetsov, right-winger Vladimir Shabrov and the legendary goalkeeper Lev Yashin.
